At first BBK Electronics was in the business of CDs, MP3 players, DVDs, and Household appliances. But the year 2000 was the time when the company started to take its place in the telephonic field. In the mid-2000s, the company hit a failure against companies like Huawei and Coolpad. This was the reason that BBK Electronics was divided into three fields i.e. Educational electronics, VCD/DVD players, and OPPO.

OPPO was the company due to which global smartphone manufacturing giant company Samsung had to change its strategy for Smartphones.
In 2014 the company launched Find 7a and then Find 7 which was the first smartphone to pack a Quad HD display in the world. Due to this OPPO managed to attract global consumers. The company started its Global expansion in 2010 starting with Thailand.
No doubt OPPO was the company that was trying to bring the best innovative ideas into the user’s hands. They also launched OPPO R5 which was the slimmest phone of that year with just 4.9 mm of thickness. And soon the company got listed among the “TOP 5 SMARTPHONE BRANDS” in the world.

BBK Electronics Strategy
OPPO and VIVO used the strategy of ‘Enemies at Home’. Both the companies competed with each other in the same market. By competing with each other in the Offline market they attracted buyers by giving them more choices.
Buyers didn’t know they were buying the phones of the same company. By having different CEOs the companies managed to differentiate themselves from each other. They provided good values at small price gaps which made users think that they are buying their choice of phone.
The other strategy was to diversify the product line. Both OPPO and Vivo launched premium smartphones like OPPO Find X and Vivo Nex, which managed to show consumers that they are premium brands and are recognized globally.
For marketing, they chose famous celebrities to carry out their campaigns. People believed their favorite Actors and bought their products.
OnePlus
OnePlus started its journey in 2013, founded by OPPO’s ex-employee, Pete Lau. It is the sub-brand of OPPO which makes it BBK Electronics’ subsidiary. While OPPO and Vivo are more focused on the Offline market, OnePlus aims to deliver flagship-level specs at low cost by cutting the commission of middlemen.
They opted Direct-to-consumer strategy. The OnePlus smartphones directly competed with the flagship’s launched by Samsung and Apple at cheaper rates. Initially, they were in association with CyanogenMod(now LineageOS) which gave them popularity in the Tech community.
Later they created Oxygen OS which was close to stock Android and provided some exclusive user-centric features. Due to this premium experience provided by OnePlus, they really gained popularity among young graduates.
The first phone launched by OnePlus was the OnePlus One, which was launched on 23rd April 2014. The aggressive price and premium specifications really hyped the phone. They initially sold their phones with an invite system as they could produce limited devices only.
The next phone was the OnePlus 2 which they marketed as ‘Flagship Killer of 2016’. The company’s goals were Amazing specifications, Low price, 0 Advertisements, Targeting young consumers.
Recently they have expanded their product line-up by adding Android TVs, Earbuds, Watch, etc. The company is really trying to increase its user base. But also just a few months back Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, left the company.
In an official press, he told that OnePlus was his singular focus for the last 7 years and everything else had to take a backseat. So he took time off to decompress and focus on some other plans.

Current Position of BBK Electronics
In recent time some confusion has arisen. Companies like OPPO and Vivo themselves deny their ownership by any Parent company. Both brands deny that BBK is their parent company.
I think since people got much more interested in the topic that all the brand’s OPPO, Vivo, OnePlus, Realme are same and seeing them as the same company, the companies are trying to diversify themselves from each other and operate as different brands.
Also on the official website, the references showing a link between OPPO and BBK are deleted, the same is with Vivo. According to me, the companies are trying to retain their individual identities and keep their different image in the consumer’s mind.
