Samsung has opened up preorders for both of the massive, curved QHD gaming monitors G7 and G9 Odyssey that debuted at CES 2020.Â
Every model has a curved VA panel of 1440p QLED 1000R with a refresh rate of 240Hz, a response time of 1ms, FreeSync 2, and G-Sync variable refresh rate support. These should make gameplay look super smooth if your graphics card is capable of delivering a high frame rate.
These two monitors look similar in terms of looks at a distance; however, the G9 has glossy white plastic on the back whereas the G7 uses matt black plastic on the rear and small triangular blue vents on the front. Both carry the futuristic core design of an Iron Man-Esque reactor, where the display reaches the stand.
Apart from the size, there are some differences. The display of the Odyssey G9 is at resolution 5120 x 1440, while that of the G7 is at resolution 2560 x 1440. The more expensive version of the G9 has an HDR1000 rating, which is brighter than the G7 HDR600 for both sizes.
ODYSSEY G7
This beast monitor has the highest curved screen size of 32“. Samsung has not only manufactured a large monitor with impressive specifications but they also have made a reasonable pleasing design.
Appearance
The color of the monitor is all black and the logo of Samsung is below the screen. The monitor has a relatively thin bezel on the top and the sides. It has a V-shaped stand of the color black.
These all sound fairly basic for any monitor. Some Extra features that stand out are RGB lighting to the rear and the front. The rear lighting creates a nice glow behind the monitor and the front lighting is below the screen to either side. It may not suit everyone’s taste, but it looks better than the usual screen design.
Design
The stand has many adjustments, with the height ranging from 475mm overall at minimum to 590mm at maximum. It tilts, moves, and swivels as well. The stand is a bit bulky and extends 255mm from the center of the monitor and 328mm around the edges.
The Odyssey G7 weighs 6.48kg on its own and 8.21kg with the stand.
Specifications
The ODYSSEY G7 is available in two options: Models 27-inch and 32-inch. Both have the same resolution, refresh rate, and illumination technology found in ODYSSEY G9 of 2560-by-1440; 16:9 aspect ratio; 600 nits high sleekness; the support for HDR 600 and the same response time. The rear illumination, however, is restricted to “subtle blue light” while Samsung adds adjustable lighting to the front bezel and opts to finish the external as matte black.
Pros
- 240Hz refresh rate
- 32″ and 1440P is gaming sweet spot
- Excellent display quality
- 1000R curve gives immersive gaming experience
- Cheaper than G9 with same Specs
Cons
- Not enough USB ports
- Stand is a bit too big
- No way of saving different display configurations
- Only 8 zone edge lit
Summary
Overall, The G7 offers the perfect balance between cost, performance, functions and resolution. You can spend significantly more on a 4K FALD HDR display, but then the G7 is about 1/3 the cost of it.
